Why Write about Diabetes with Dogs?

Because blood sugar control is challenging and is a journey.  As is training and understanding your blood sugar alert dog.  I hope to help those with blood sugar challenges be prepared and proactive in caring for their health.

There are a lot of commonalities between caring for your dog and your blood sugars.  If you have a dog, you know they take care but that investment returns much.  Such as your health and blood sugar control.

Yesterday my dog got too close to another dog's ball at the park -- in trying to prevent a fight, I got bitten. My mom, who has been declining in health, got upset with my trying to help organize and arrange her day to be simpler and enable her to be healthy and happier.  The stress of that situation caused a crazy blood sugar spike. To bring it down, I made sure to drink lots of water and get low-impact cardio.

Stress reactivity will spike blood sugars, so the important thing is to have an alerting method around - such as a blood sugar dog or continuous glucose monitor, and when you're in stressful situations, learn to manage it stress.   I use a Medtronic or Dexcom blood glucose monitor as a CGM and fingersticks to back up the alert.  My blood sugar dog's keen nose and alert training remind me when my blood sugar is hitting the lower and upper threshold of my blood sugar targets.  I used insulin, continuous monitoring,  yoga and in low-intensity exercise to bring me back to a normal blood sugar range.

Your daily choices are the key to help control your blood sugar.   Key things to control your blood sugars are:
1. Checking your blood sugars and tracking the results
2. Taking your medication (insulin or otherwise)
3. Increasing your body's insulin sensitivity
4. Your food choices you make
5. The nutritional supplements you take. (Make sure to include nutritional supplements with high ORAC values and health-protective benefits such as cinnamon, biotin, manganese, and gymnaestra sylvestre, and juniper). Glucosure is a product that contains these already, and as the ingredients are proven adaptogens.)
6. Your exercise patterns
7. Controlling and managing your stress (with companionship and loyalty, a blood sugar dog can be a big part of that!)
8.A key to managing all of this is setting goals to manifest health and setting goals (AND scheduling daily action tasks) focused on the areas above to help you reach them!
